Nick was born in the USA and raised in England where he was educated at Gordonstoun School in Scotland – the world’s original Outward-Bound School. He has always had an undying passion for doing the unordinary and making it his life – whether it is sailing, windsurfing, skiing, snowboarding, or flying planes.
Nick started sailing at age five, raced dinghies competitively as a youth at the national level for England, and worked in the mega-yacht industry for a few years as a young adult before becoming a student at the world-renowned United Kingdom Sailing Academy. This is where he obtained a slew of professional sail training/marine safety certifications – including his RYA Commercial Yacht Master Offshore Captain’s License for vessels up to 200 ton.
Since 1996, Nick obtained instructor certifications from the three most respected sailing certification systems in the world – RYA (Commercial Yacht Master, Level 3 Sailing Instructor, Windsurfing Instructor, and Safety Boat Instructor), US Sailing (Sailing & Powerboat Instructor), and the ASA (101, 103, 104, 105 Instructor).
Over the years, Nick has developed his natural talents and sailing skills as a career instructor – teaching sailing, powerboat handling, windsurfing, and Safe Boating courses while managing sailing programs at prestigious yacht clubs and award-winning community sailing centers on western Long Island Sound.
Nick is also a commercial pilot and flight instructor. Sailing and aviation have always had a lot in common, and Nick found it easy to transfer his sailing knowledge over to this new career in 2008.
While running his flight school and charter plane company, he coaches high school sailing teams, teaches clients aboard their personal boats, and assists Black Rock during peak times of the summer.
With over twenty years of year-round sailing instruction experience, Nick has proven himself out on the water as a true professional. Having worked with Brenton in the past, Black Rock recruited him specifically for his unique teaching talent, humor, immense sailing knowledge, and relaxed/cautious approach.
