CAPTAIN PAUL
Paul grew up sailing around Salem Sound in Massachusetts and has an extensive background in youth sailing instruction. He lived aboard his family’s Catalina and then his own Hunter sailboat for a few summers and acquired a taste for the cruising life.
In 2011, Brenton saw something he liked in Paul and took him “under his wing” to start prepping him for a career in sailing. Since then, Paul has acquired his USCG Master 100T license as well as ASA instructor qualifications up to the 104 bareboat cruising & 114 catamaran cruising level.
In 2014, Paul joined the Black Rock team as Charter and Club Manager, and quickly proved to be a formidable instructor. His enthusiasm is infectious, and his clear instruction and ability to keep things simple is a true asset. Very few ASA instructors can say that they have earned a 3.99 out of 4.0 based on ASA customer feedback. This is why Paul was awarded “Outstanding Instructor 2014, 2016, 2018, AND 2019” by the American Sailing Association.
He currently lives in Boston during the summer, while spending his winters delivering yachts along the eastern seaboard and out to Bermuda, teaching advanced cruising courses for Black Rock out of our Virgin Island and Bahamas locations, and working as a charter captain with our partners, CYOA Yacht Charters, running 50ft monohulls and catamarans throughout the US, British, and Spanish Virgin Islands. Teaching year-round aboard large boats, in “large” waters, has truly accelerated his skill development and his future as a sailing instructor is extremely bright!
In addition to sailing, Paul is a certified professional ski instructor with the PSIA and a climbing instructor with the BSA. Since 2009 he has held a National EMT license and in 2011 furthered his EMT certification to include remote and wilderness medicine.
In 2015, Paul became a partner in Black Rock because of his drive, enthusiasm, professionalism, and talent. We are very happy to have “Captain Paul” on our team.
