EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

Black Rock Sailing School is looking for a small, efficient, multi-talented team who will work together in all facets of the job toward a common goal – to operate a highly professional program that exceeds the needs and expectations of our clients.

Our team consists of knowledgeable, responsible, professional sailors, who love teaching and the sport of sailing. All candidates must have well rounded sailing backgrounds and demonstrate EXCEPTIONAL teaching skills.

Interviews will consist of many components, such as qualifications check, interview, classroom presentations, and on- water instruction/skill check. Expect very competitive salaries for the chosen few!


All applicants must provide the following prior to interview:

  • FIVE YEARS of collective teaching experience as a sailing instructor within the past ten years is preferred.  Those who do not have this much teaching experience, but have exceptional sailing backgrounds, a great personality, and believe they would make a great instructor should certainly apply!
  • Hold ASA Instructor Certification for the levels they wish to instruct (BRSS is only an ASA Training Facility but US Sailing Instructors are welcome to apply. They will simply need to attend and pass an ASA I.Q.C. to convert over.)
  • Hold a current USCG OUPV or Master Merchant Marine License
  • Hold a TWIC (A USCG license requirement for homeland security purposes)
  • Be enrolled in a random drug testing program (A USCG license requirement)
  • Hold current First Aid & CPR certification from approved organization (A USCG license requirement, as well as ASA/US Sailing requirement)
  • A strong employment resume (All previous employers and references will be contacted)
  • A strong sailing resume (powerboat experience is a plus as well)

Photocopies of Instructor Certification Cards, USCG License, TWIC, Drug Test Consortium, 1st Aid & CPR Cards, must be provided at time of hire and be kept on file with BRSS management.

All of our staff complete an extensive “in house” training program during the pre-season and frequent “on the spot” training during the season on an as-need basis.

Instructor duties include:
Fully understanding curriculum, preparing for each course, showing up on time and end class on time each day, execute training safely & professionally, administer exams, and provide follow-up support to students

  • Administer Club Sail Check Outs, supervise Club Sail program, provide safety boat support
  • Cleaning each vessel after use
  • Daily maintenance checks on training boats
  • Keeping all certifications/requirements current
  • Assisting with SailTime Boston program
