Coastal Navigation Courses in Warwick

This is one of our advanced sailing courses! The owner of Black Rock Sailing School learned these skills as a student at Maine Maritime Academy, and these skills has saved him countless times! After completing our intensive 3-day classroom-based course, you will earn ASA (105) Coastal Navigation Certification. This course will provide you with the advanced skills needed to plot courses and identify your location along coastal waters anywhere in the world.

Boston Harbor ferries and world-class racers have recently run aground due to their dependence on – or misuse of – electronic navigation systems. Learn how to navigate WHEN these systems fail you, and cross check the accuracy of such systems while underway!

Topics cover charts, tides, government publications used in navigation, trip planning, course plotting, various methods of obtaining position fixes, set & drift, avoiding hazards, and so much more. Stay safe while at sea!

Experience Level

No ASA prerequisites, however we HIGHLY recommends a basic understanding of nautical charts and experience reading a compass. Content is appropriate for power or sail. This ASA-certified course is more in depth than the USCG navigation module. Be prepared to study outside of class.
